Veggie seller assaults woman, arrested

A vegetable seller at TK Market here was arrested on Thursday for assaulting a 40-year-old woman with a sickle.

The woman, identified as A Malar of Selvapuram, sustained injuries on her neck and hands and was admitted to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).

The arrested was identified as A Ranganathan alias Jaffar, 48, of JJ Nagar near Kuniamuthur. The duo runs vegetable shops at TK Market.

Police on the case said Malar's son-in-law Siva used to work at Ranganathan's vegetable shop. A few days back, Siva had allegedly fought with his wife.

Malar thought that Siva was instigated by Ranganathan and advised him not to work under Ranganathan.

When Siva stopped going to work, Ranganathan confronted Malar at the market on Wednesday night. In a fit of rage, he took a sickle and attacked her on her neck and hands. An ijured Malar was rushed to CMCH.

Based on her complaint, Big Bazaar Street police have registered a case against Ranganathan under section 294 (b) (sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words in or near any public place), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 307 (attempt to murder) and 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

Police arrested Ranganathan on Thursday and later produced him before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
