Goldsmith kills himself by consuming cyanide

A 31-year-old goldsmith committed suicide by consuming cyanide at his shop on Big Bazar Street on Saturday afternoon after he found himself in heavy debt.

This is the third case of goldsmith suicide reported in the city in the past two months.

The deceased was identified as A Narayanan, of Ganga Thottam. He owned a shop on Big Bazaar Street. According to police on the case, Narayanan was in heavy debt and wasn't in a position to repay the loan as his business run into a loss.

On Saturday afternoon, Narayanan killed himself by consuming cyanide, a poisonous chemical used for gold plating. The Big Bazar police station registered a case around 8pm.

Narayanan was married for two years without any children. The city had recently seen two suicides by goldsmiths.

It is claimed that the intervention of latest technology in jewellery manufacturing has left many goldsmiths without any work. Many goldsmiths still employ old techniques of jewelery making and thus are unable to compete with modern techniques employed by jewellers.
