Man stabbed to death

M. Shankar (31) of Mudhukulathur in Ramanathapuram district who was stabbed at the New Bus Stand on Mettupalayam Road on Saturday night died at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital in the wee hours of Wednesday. Following the death a case of attempt to murder (307 of the Indian Penal Code - IPC) against the accused M. Gandhi alias Gandhivel (27) of Kavundampalayam was altered to murder (302 of IPC).

Police sources said that the victim and his friend B. Nandhakumar (34) of Thudiyalur demanded ganja from the accused who refused it. Following this the two allegedly assaulted Gandhivel and grabbed a portion of the ganja he had. About an hour later Gandhivel spotted the duo near the time keeper’s office in the Bus Stand and stabbed them with a knife.

Shankar suffered an injury on his abdomen, while Nandhakumar suffered a cut on his hand. They were rushed to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital where Shankar underwent a surgery and was in the intensive care unit. He died on Wednesday. The police said that Gandhivel was arrested on Sunday and remanded in the prison here under judicial custody.
