Four arrested for conning Sri Lankan refugee

Four persons, including a woman, were arrested on charges of cheating a Sri Lankan refugee, by collecting lot of money from him for a job in Australia.

40-year-old Muthuraju, a Sri lankan refugee currently residing in Kottoor refugee camp near Pollachi, filed a complaint with the Q Branch wing of the police, claiming that a year ago, four persons belonging to Chennai had taken Rs.3.70 lakhs from him, promising to get a job in Australia with a work permit visa.

The gang failed to get him the job and the four became untraceable.

Based on the complaint, police arrested Edison alias Rajan, and Vimalan from the Gummidipondi refugee camp in Thiruvaloor district; Anton Charles Patrick, a resident of Valasaravakam; and Vajitha, 34 of K.K. Nagar in Chennai.

The accused were brought to Pollachi and preliminary interrogations revealed that the gang has cheated many such innocent people in the pretext of getting jobs. They were produced before the Pollachi Magistrate Court last evening, remanded to custody, and sent to Puzal prison in Chennai.
