Vaalankulam is getting rejuvenated

'Rejuvenating & cleaning' of ponds, rivers and their pathways is what people of the city are very familiar with, these days. The noyyal river project is marching at full swing and recently the much awaited Vaalankulam project has just begun its journey. Its been the dream of locals, NGO's and environmentalists to see the water body in its best form.

The estimated cost for the project is Rs. 10 crores and the Corporation for its first time in its history has decided to seek funds privately through donations for the project. Annamalis Toyota and Brookefields mall have donated upto 90 lakhs and have become the first donors of this project.

Vaalankulam gets Gabion wall, a one of a kind technology for building walls around water bodies across the world. The technology uses a wired basket filled with sandstone, bluestones and river pebbles - the unique feature of which is reduction of soil erosion and noise pollution. The wall is 1mt in height and 2 mt in width and covers an area of 1.6 km running through Sungam by pass and railway line. The project will be ready for commencement in a weeks time and will be completed in 3 months time says K. Chandran, Chief Archeitect. The raw materials required for the construction is en route from Pune.

The project has some real enticing features for the locals. A safe walking track with 4ft tall parapet wall with an enclosed ceiling and planting of lush green trees all around the place. A budget of 4 crores has been exclusively allotted for establishing a serene park and a amphitheatre, tenders for the same has already been issued by the Corporation.
