Swachh Bharat Mission: Students to construct toilets in Coimbatore

In a first of its kind, college students would be involved in a Coimbatore Corporation project funded by the government and the corporates.

The civic body plans to rope in final year civil engineering students to construct one toilet within 72 hours. The construction should be as per the specifications and design given by the corporation officials.

The cost, area of construction, materials for construction, training and documentation would be done by the Coimbatore Corporation, corporates and other volunteers.

"Under the initiative, the students should register themselves on toiletfirst.in and take part in the construct-a-thon that will be held for three days. It is a new initiative where we plan to construct several toilets within three days. One student will have to construct two toilets," said Suresh Bhandari, coordinator of Clean cities foundation.

"The government's share of Rs 8000 will be used to pay the labourers who would be employed for the toilet construction. The funding from the corporates would be used to buy materials. We have requested ACC Cements to supply cement rather than setting up toilets. Other companies have also been requested to buy material which would be then supplied to these students at the spots. This way we plan to set up at least 2,500 toilets in three days' time," said A G Padmanabhan of Spice Foundation who is also a Swachh Bharat ambassador.
