Protests continue in Gujarat; three buses torched

Violent protests by Dalits continued in Gujarat on Wednesday with incidents of bus burning, clashes and highway blockades being reported from Saurashtra and north Gujarat.

Protesters are demanding stern action against the cow vigilante group members who publicly flogged Dalits in Una on July 11.

Two more persons attempted suicide in Saurashtra. Almost two dozen persons have attempted to end their lives since Monday.

In Kadi town of Mehsana district, three public transport buses were torched by mobs, following which the authorities shut down the bus station.

In Ahmedabad district, two instances of group clashes were reported and the police had to use tear gas shells to disperse the mobs, which had blocked the highway.

In Porbandar, there were incidents of clashes while in Keshod town, near Junagadh, two groups engaged in stone throwing, forcing the police to fire tear gas shells. In Surendranagar, protesters forced shops to down shutters for the second day.

“Around a dozen incidents of violence were reported and the situation is still volatile,” said a senior police officer in Gandhinagar.

DGP in-charge P.P. Pandey has asked police commissioners and the district police chiefs to sternly deal with rioters and those damaging public property.
