Jail term for circulating counterfeit currency


Chief Judicial Magistrate of Coimbatore convicted C. Kandasamy alias Mohan on Tuesday, as he was found guilty of circulating counterfeit currency.

A case was registered against the accused under section 489(B) (using as genuine, forged or counterfeit currency-notes or bank-notes) 489(C) (possession of forged or counterfeit currency-notes or bank-notes) of the Indian Penal Code in 2012, as he had counterfeit currency for Rs. 4,100 in the denomination of Rs. 500 and Rs. 100.

Inquiries revealed that he obtained counterfeit currency for Rs. 10,000 from Kannan of Rasipuram, who later surrendered before the court. The police said that Kandasamy was a habitual offender. The court awarded three years imprisonment, and slapped a fine of Rs. 500 on him.
