Workshop on women’s health held in Coimbatore college


A two-day workshop on awareness of reproductive health issues and its impact on the academic performances of adolescent girls were conducted at Sankara Institute of Management Science.

The college conducted the workshop in collaboration with the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development. ‘Women health and its impact’ was the topic of debate in the workshop.

Dr. Mridhubashini Govindarajan, director, Women’s Centre, Coimbatore,

explained the various health issues and factors that affect adolescent

girls and how awareness of these issues will help them balance and lead a happy life.

She advised the young girls not to skip breakfast, to avoid junk foods and be self-loving to be in the path of fitness and good health. Dr. Meenakumari Mohan, the chief paediatrician from Masonic Hospital Coimbatore talked about pre-marital guidance for adolescent girls.

Dr. Nicholas, psychologist from Naveenam Counselling and Holistic Development Centre, Coimbatore, stressed the need to self analyse ones weakness and strengths and to be always in balanced state of mind. “Girls should be mentally strong to tackle problems such as harassments,” she said.

‘Impact of environmental factors on health issues’, Dr. Visalakshi Rajeswari, professor and head, department of resource management, Avinashilingam University for Women spoke elaborately on the various environmental degradation factors that have high impact on health of women, especially the changing life styles of women that are more sedentary and westernised.
