Installed as AIOS president

Chairman of The Eye Foundation, Coimbatore, D. Ramamurthy, was installed as the president of the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) for 2016 - 17 at the annual national conference of the 87-year-old association held at Kolkata from February 25 to 28.

Dr. Ramamurthy is the third president of the association from Tamil Nadu. He was the chairman of the Scientific Committee of AIOS from 2008 to 2014.

Insurance Cover

He told reporters here that there was a need for strengthening insurance cover for eye treatments to enable more patients to benefit from modern technologies.

He also stressed on facilitating ophthalmic medical tourism where patients from abroad can utilise excellent facilities in India at a fraction of the cost compared to the West. About advanced training in specialty areas, he said that the AIOS had come up with a detailed curriculum for every sub specialty to standardise fellowship training.

He emphasised on the importance of providing safe and quality eye care to underprivileged through outreach programmes.

Dr. Ramamurthy said that efforts would be made to ensure safe conduct of eye camps in a standardised manner.
