Long ago, Lord Krishna and his elder brother Lord Balarama lived at the Brajbhoomi with the innocent cowherds who knew nothing else but bestow love on the Supreme personality of Godhead. The favourite past times of Krishna, the flute playing cowherd has been ever popular with the devotees of our sacred country. The Bhagavata Puranam contains a complete chronicle of the Leelas of Lord Krishna and each one of them offer us refuge, blessings and guidance. It was during those wonderful times that the Gopis of Brajbhoomi had the good fortune of living and playing with Lord Krishna. The parents, Nanda Maharaj and Yashodha looked after the Lord with utmost care and affection. The innumerable stories of Lord Krishna have been brought out in the amazing text Narayaneeyam by Narayana Bhattadri right in front of the icon of Lord Krishna at Guruvayoor. The great Upanyasa Chakravarthi, Brahmasri Sengalipuram Anantharama Dikshithar has written a marvellous treatise on the " Narayaneeyam ".

It was during the incarnation of Lord Vishnu as Lord Krishna that the people of the Brajbhoomi which consisted of Vrindavan and Gokul decided to offer a special prayer to Lord Indra, the giver of rainfall in order seek his benediction. On learning about the celebrations, the ever effulgent Lord Krishna suggested that it would be better to offer their prayers to Mount Govardhan who continued to bless the cowherds and their families with abundance. The lovable cowherds who worked for nothing else but the well being of their cows immediately hastened to the base of Mount Govardhan and began the process of offering prayers with flowers, fruits and large quantities of sweets, savouries and varieties of items made of rice and wheat. The action of the cowherds enraged Indra and he displayed his anger with fearsome lightening, thunder and heavy rainfall. The frightened villagers sought refuge in Lord Krishna and LO ! he lifted the huge Mount Govardhan with his little finger and held it up like an umbrella in order to ensure the safety of the Brajvasis who had offered their Saranagati or surrender to him. In spite of the rains continuing without respite, the cowherds and their families continued to be safe and a distraught Indra realised his folly by understanding that Lord Krishna was none other than Lord Narayana, The Lord and Master of the Universe.

Lord Indra hastened to Lord Krishna and supplicated in front of him and offered his apologies for having caused harm to the people who were supposed to be under his care. The benevolent Lord Krishna forgave Indra and this Leela is being celebrated as the Annakoota Utsavam by the Bhagavatas of the world. Accordingly, Lord Krishna blesses the devotees who conduct the Shri Govardhanagiri Utsavam with good rainfall.
