Coimbatore City Police Commissioner K Balakrishnan inspected the surveillance cameras and surveillance towers which have been beefed up to ensure the safety of the public. Police personnel have been deployed at Oppanakara street, 100 Feet Road, Cross Cut Road and Gandhipuramper to ensure there are no incidents of crime during Diwali season.

Coimbatore: With Diwali just around the corner, crowds of people have been thronging market areas like Oppanakara Street and Big Bazaar to buy clothes and goods. "These days, 750 police personnel are deployed in places like Big Bazaar, Gandhipuram etc. in the Coimbatore city area to prevent incidents of crime," stated the Coimbatore Police Commissioner, K Balakrishnan. He inspected Oppanakara Street to personally monitor how the congestion is being rectified only for the monitoring work to be followed during the festive season.

Coimbatore City Police Commissioner, K Balakrishnan inspected the surveillance cameras and surveillance towers which have been beefed up to ensure the safety of the public. Speaking to reporters later, the City Police Commissioner said, "We have made various arrangements for people to come and go safely during Diwali. As many as 750 police personnel have been deployed at Oppanakara street, 100 Feet Road, Cross Cut Road and Gandhipuram. More than 5 lakh people visited these areas on Saturday and Sunday. We have installed CCTV cameras to protect the public from chain snatchers. Similarly, we have also set up watch towers. There has been no major incident of crime in Coimbatore city during the festive season as of now, since busy shopping areas are constantly monitored and so also those involved in serial crimes. Security measures are being carried out under the leadership of two Deputy Commissioners in the densely populated areas. Similarly, we are planning to increase the working hours of shops at night to reduce congestion. Similarly, all departments, including fire and hospital, are on standby to deal with any untoward incident.

The City Police Commissioner also added, "Additional parking has been done in areas such as Bazaar, Gandhipuram etc. as people are flocking to buy goods. Similarly, we are planning to direct buses on alternate routes without entering market areas. 14 special squads have been formed in densely populated areas and are being closely monitored. Those travelling to their native places for Diwali should inform police stations in their respective areas when they lock their houses. By doing so, the police will step up night patrolling and surveillance on those streets."

He also advised the public to avoid crowding and that police teams will help those going out in buses to stand in queues and patiently board the buses. "Taking advantage of the fact that the public will be keen to go to their native places during festival days, a case will be registered if omni buses charge exorbitant fares. The police will not hesitate to make arrests against them. If omni buses charge more than the amount thus fixed, the public should come forward to lodge a complaint with the police," emphasised K Balakrishnan.
