AIADMK workers block roads near MGR statue in Tirupur to protest against Edappadi K Palaniswami's arrest

Protesting against the arrest of opposition leader Edappadi K Palaniswami near MGR's statue next to Tirupur Corporation, AIADMK workers staged a road roko.

Tirupur: Even as AIADMK workers across Tamil Nadu have been protesting and staging road blockades to protest against the arrest of their leader, Edapaddi K Palaniswami in Chennai on Wednesday, more than 100 AIADMK workers staged a road blockade near the MGR statue next to the Tirupur Corporation.

During the protest, the AIADMK cadres raised slogans condemning the police for arresting the Leader of the Opposition, AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami. Slogans were also raised against the Speaker for not recognising their choice of R B Udayakumar as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, who was unanimously elected by the AIADMK MLAs. Traffic was disrupted due to the road blockade by the AIADMK cadres. The police intervened and held talks to calm down and disperse the protesters.

Leader of the Opposition K Palaniswami and his AIADMK legislators were evicted from the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Tuesday for disrupting the House proceedings. They had caused commotion aiming to coerce Speaker M Appavu to take up an issue concerning their party. Even as the AIADMK members remained adamant, Appavu directed the Assembly marshals to evict Palaniswami and the AIADMK MLAs.

Later, speaking to reporters outside the Assembly before he was arrested by the police along with co-workers from AIADMK, Palaniswami alleged that the Speaker did not comply with the AIADMK's majority decision in electing R B Udayakumar to replace Panneerselvam as the party's Deputy Leader of the Opposition.
