20 tonnes of food items exported in 23 days from Coimbatore to foreign countries for Deepavali - Airport authorities

According to reports, several dishes, including sweets and spices weighing 20 tonnes, were exported from Coimbatore to Sharjah and Singapore from October 1 to 23 on the occasion of Diwali.


Coimbatore: Flights are being operated from Coimbatore airport to Sharjah five days a week and to Singapore on all days of the week.

Every year, Diwali festival is celebrated with a lot of popularity among Indians living abroad for many dishes including sweets, spices and other delicacies. This will result in export of heavier food items. This year, 20 tonnes of food items have been exported in 23 days.

Airport officials said, Since the beginning of October, a large number of dishes, including sweets and spices, have been booked at the warehouse office at coimbatore airport for exports to Singapore and Sharjah.

In the first two weeks, several dishes were booked, including sweets weighing 4.5 tonnes per week. In the third week i.e. from October 17 to October 23 alone, 10 tonnes of food items were exported.

A total of 3 tonnes were transported on the Sharjah flight and 7 tons were carried on the Singapore flight. A total of 20 tonnes of food items have been exported to the two countries from October 1 to October 23.

While many varieties of dishes were exported this year, many special forms of sweets prepared on the occasion of Diwali, including lamps, were exported more.

Bookings for sweets and alkaline items are expected to come down in the coming days and other food items will be booked in smaller quantities as usual.
