Dist. administration slaps Rs.50,000 fine on shops in Nilgiris for using banned plastic items

In a raid conducted by officials led by the Ooty Revenue Divisional Officer Duraisamy to clamp down on the use of banned plastic, a fine of Rs.50,000 was imposed on shops that used plastic products.

The Nilgiris: In line with the Tamil Nadu Government's order that banned the usage of single-use and discarded plastic items, Nilgiris district has led the way in the environmental battle against use of plastics.

Accordingly, considering the environmental importance of the Nilgiris district, the use of 19 types of single-use plastic items such as plastic bags, plastic cups, plastic tumblers, plastic spoons, plated paper plates, plastic banana leaf-shaped sheets, plastic torans (thoranagal) and plastic flags have been banned.

A survey is being conducted on behalf of the Revenue Department, Municipal Administration and the Environment and Pollution Control Board on the orders of the Nilgiris District Collector, S P Amrith. Through the survey, monitoring was done if banned plastic items were being used in hotels, bakeries, restaurants, shopping malls, markets, etc.

A sudden raid led by the Ooty Revenue Divisional Officer Duraisamy and officials on Wednesday unearthed the large number of plastic items that had been kept for use in various shops.

Following this, a fine of Rs.50,000 was imposed on the shops and the banned plastic items were seized.
