Coimbatore: Rehabilitation works at Periyar Memorial Samathuvapuram in Vellakinar area of Coimbatore District at an estimated cost of Rs.77.05 lakhs are in progress. Tamil Nadu Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Periya Karuppan and Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister Senthil Balaji inspected the meeting.
Periyar Memorial Samathuvapuram is located in Vellakinar area of Coimbatore. There are more than 100 houses here. As these were damaged, the renovation works were being carried out at a cost of Rs.77.05 lakhs.

Tamil Nadu Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Periya Karuppan and Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister Senthil Balaji inspected the completion of more than 50 houses, entrance gate, community hall, ration shop, water tank, library, anganwadi centre and road works.

They garlanded the statue of Periyar, who was there, and paid homage to him. They then visited the house of a renovated beneficiary, followed by cutting a ribbon and opening the library building and planting saplings.
They also went to the anganwadi centre and distributed sweets to the children. Minister Periya Karuppan said that the Samathurapuram project brought under the DMK rule will be revived again.

Department secretary Amudha, District Collector Sameeran, Corporation Commissioner Prathap, DMK district secretaries Ravi, Thalapathy Murugesan, former MP Nagaraj, former MLA Aarukutty, and TP Subramaniam, V N Palaniappan, Arulkumar, councillors Pushpamani, Karpagam Rajasekharan and others were present on the occasion.
