Cooking utensil exports from Coimbatore to Gulf countries on the rise

According to industry experts, cooking utensil and equipment are exported worth several crores of rupees every month from Coimbatore to Gulf countries including Dubai, UAE and Qatar by ship.


Coimbatore: The industrial city of Coimbatore district is also a global leader in the manufacture of cooking utensils. Coimbatore manufacturers make a wide variety of cooking equipment required for kitchens in various establishments including hotels, college hostels, and hospitals.

According to industry experts, the demand for cooking utensils and equipment has increased not only at home but also abroad, especially in the Gulf countries, where equipment worth hundreds of crores of rupees is being exported every month from Coimbatore.

Selvaraj, a member of the Coimbatore Cooking Equipment Manufacturers Association, said, "Coimbatore excels in the manufacture of cooking equipment. A wide variety of cooking equipments are manufactured, including tilting grinder, vegetables, onion cutting machines, potato peeling machine, coconut grating etc".

"Usually, a large quantity of equipment is manufactured and sold for five-star hotels and college hostels. But at present, construction projects are being implemented extensively in the Gulf countries and most of the workers and labourers working there are from Tamil Nadu and India" he said and added..

"As they set up temporary kitchens in places where construction projects are carried out the need for kitchen utensil have raised to a great extent and resultantly the city of Coimbatore, get this work orders for the export of utensils".

"The equipment used in the kitchens set up there for one year, two years or the day after the project is completed will be treated as scrap (old materials). Temporary kitchens will be set up afresh for each construction project" Selvaraj said.

With new construction projects in the Gulf countries on the rise, naturally the manfacturers here get plenty of orders. The Coimbatore- made utensils also make their way to counnstirs including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman.

"As per the logistics of the export, the consignments are transported in trucks to port cities like Chennai and Thoothukudi, and from there they are transported to foreign countries in ships by containers," Selvaraj said and added " Equipment worth hundreds of crores of rupees is being exported from Coimbatore every month"
