Young woman attempts self-immolation in front of Tirupur Collectorate

Distraught at the inaction of the Tirupur police with regard to her complaint of domestic abuse by her alcoholic husband, the young woman attempted to set herself ablaze in front of the Tirupur District Collectorate.

Tirupur: Manjula who hails from Kongu Main Road in Tirupur gave her daughter Soundarya in marriage to her cousin Manohar, a construction worker in Coimbatore district, four months ago.

Manohar, an alcoholic, reportedly beat and harassed Soundarya ever since they were married and also allegedly attacked Manjula who had questioned him about his harassment.

In this regard, Soundarya and her mother Manjula had lodged a complaint at the Tirupur North police station but even after two months, the police had allegedly not taken any action on the complaint.

Soundarya had become depressed, and arrived at the Tirupur District Collectorate on Monday to set herself ablaze by pouring petrol on herself.

The police, who were on security duty at the Collectorate, rescued Soundarya and took her to the police station.

Soundarya's self-immolation bid in front of the Tirupur District Collectorate created a stir in the area.
