Villagers demand capture of crop-raiding wild elephant near Gudalur, threaten to stage hunger strike

The people of Kavundankolli area near Gudalur have demanded that a troublesome wild elephant, which has been damaging agricultural crops, be caught at the earliest. Otherwise, they have threatened to stage a hunger strike on January 25.


The Nilgiris: A lone wild elephant has entered the village near Gudalur in the Nilgiris district and is damaging agricultural crops in areas like Kavundankolli and Padanthurai areas.

Despite repeated representations to the Forest department officials, no action has been taken so far due to which the people of the area have been aggrieved a lot.



Even though petitions were submitted to Gudalur Revenue Divisional Officer, and District forest officer no action has been taken yet to end the man animal conflict.

In the meanwhile talks were held with affected villagers by Gudalur Revenue Divisional Officer and Police officials, and it was decided to catch the wild elephant earliest.

“Failing which, we would stage a hunger strike in front of Thevar Solai town panchayats” the affected villagers warned.

Following this, the officials have assured that the capture of the wild elephant would be taken up soon.
