Coimbatore: Nilgiris MP A Raja laid a foundation stone for a new check dam at a cost of Rs 2.67 crore at Karamadai West in Coimbatore district. He said the scheme will be beneficial to the farmers when it is completed.
While the farming community are producing banana, coconut, sugarcane, vegetables and millets spread over an area of about 5,000 acres in more than 20 villages, including Tholampalayam, Velliangadu and Thayanur, in the western parts of Karamadai in Coimbatore district, drought situation persisted in the recent years affecting their prospects.
Hence, the farmers have been demanding that a check dam should be constructed to conserve water from the Ghats and to augment water availability for bore wells.
Subsequently, funds were allocated for the construction of a new check dam of about two metres in height and 26 metres in length, and at a cost of Rs.2.67 crore in the Periyapallam area.
