Sholayar dam storage dips to new low, disappointing tourists

The inflow of water to the Sholayar dam at Valparai in Coimbatore district is 30 cubic feet and the water level in the dam is 604 cubic ft.



Coimbatore: The Sholayar Dam which is one of the major reservoirs in the district, has a storage capacity of 160 feet. While 5 TMC of water will be stored in the dam, the rest will be used to generate hydroelectric power for the Manampalli power plant.

These excess waters will reach the Parambikulam dam and then will be redirected to the Aliyar dam and Amaravathi dam. Sholaiyar dam waters are used to irrigate about two lakh acres of land in the region.



Even as the summer has set in parts of the Sholayar dam have dried up and the inflow of water into the dam has decreased.



The inflow of water to the Sholayar dam at Valparai in the Coimbatore district is 30 cubic ft. and the water level in the dam is 604 cubic ft.

Visiting tourists are disappointed as the dam has dried up and there are patches of earth visible. The farmers have also expressed anguish that due to the fall in the water level of the dam, there would be a shortage of water for agriculture.
