Kurumba Community people petition Collector, urge him to include them in the SC category

In the petition submitted they have requested the district administration to enlist them under the scheduled tribes category and provide a community certificate for the same.

Coimbatore: A group of the Kurumba community people appealed to the District administration to enlist them under the Scheduled Tribes and extend all benefits.

About five lakh kurumbar community people dwell across the Coimbatore district and they are not provided with welfare measures.

The petitioners alleged that cities like Chennai have granted them all benefits whereas people in Coimbatore, have not received any.

Representatives of the Coimbatore District Kurumba Sangam submitted a petition regarding this to the District administration.

Devaraj, District Youth wing secretary, Kurumba Sangam said, "90% of our people lack any identity.. Most of us are sheep rearers and less than 10% of our community people are educated and employed. Fewer than 1% of our community people are employed in government jobs”

In the petition submitted they have requested the district administration to enlist them under the scheduled tribes category and provide a community certificate for the same.

In addition to this, they requested the government for the formation of the Sheep welfare association.

In this regard, Devaraj added, "when the flock go missing, there is no way that we receive compensation or can claim insurance, as there's no provision for it. We request the government to address our demands".
