Cauvery Calling achieves spectacular yearly target of planting 1 crore saplings in Tamil Nadu

The target was achieved with the overwhelming support and participation of farmers who came forward to plant saplings on their lands. The milestone coincided with the celebration of World Forest Day on March 22.

Coimbatore: The Cauvery Calling movement set a spectacular record of planting 1 crore saplings in Tamil Nadu in the current financial year of 2022-23). The record was achieved with the overwhelming support and participation of farmers who came forward to plant saplings on their lands.

The milestone coincided with the celebration of World Forest Day which is being celebrated on Wednesday, March 22.

State Field Coordinator of the Cauvery Calling movement, Tamilmaran said, “Since 2004, we have been encouraging farmers to do tree-based agriculture. As a result of this, thus far we have planted 8.4 crore saplings with the active support of farmers. 1,68,000 farmers have learned about tree-based agriculture and planted trees on their land. Sadhguru launched the Cauvery Calling movement in 2019 to revitalize the Cauvery river through tree-based agriculture and improve the livelihoods of lakhs of farmers who depend on it.”

On reaching the milestone of planting 1 crore trees, Tamilmaran added, “We have successfully completed the goal on March 20, much due to the awareness created by Sadhguru in Tamil Nadu and the dedicated commitment of Isha volunteers. We have also planted 1.30 crore saplings in Karnataka this year.”

Explaining the benefits of tree-based agriculture, Tamilmaran said, “All farmers can plant trees in their lands, which can be customized according to their needs. Farmers with large land holdings can plant trees on at least one-third of their total land. Trees can also be planted all over the land and other crops be intercropped. The farmer's income is likely to increase by 3 to 8 times by switching to tree farming. Apart from this, a stable additional income can also be obtained by cultivating pepper varieties on trees on plains too. We are also providing techniques for tree farming in rain-fed agricultural lands,” he further added.

Tamilmaran also added that Cauvery Calling recommends soil-specific trees suitable to each individual farmer. 40 Isha Nurseries are functioning across Tamil Nadu to provide timber saplings required by the farmers at affordable prices. Saplings are produced organically and given to farmers at a subsidized price of Rs. 3 per sapling. The preparatory work for the production of saplings for the next rainy season has started. Farmers can contact 80009 80009 for free consulting on tree-based farming and to also get saplings.
