Coimbatore: Police have arrested a relative of a woman who stabbed her boyfriend to death while he was on his way to wish her a happy birthday in Coimbatore.

Prashanth (21), a resident of Gandhinagar in Sundarapuram, Coimbatore, and the son of Vijayakumar, has been identified as the deceased. He was employed by a private company as a loadman.

Prashanth was in love with dhanya (19), a resident of Vasantham Nagar in Chettipalayam, for the past three years. Initially, both the families were opposed to the love affair. Later, they said they would get the two married next year.

Since it is Dhanya's birthday today, Prashanth along with three of his friends went to Dhanya's house on a two-wheeler to wish her at midnight. Dhanya's father Mahadevan (40) and cousin Vignesh (29) stopped Prashanth as the four were drunk at the time.

This provoked an argument between Vignesh and Prashanth. Prashanth once attacked Vignesh with a stick during a scuffle.

Vignesh stabbed Prashanth in a fit of rage. Prashanth was rescued by his friends and taken to the Coimbatore Government Hospital.

The doctors who examined him there said he died on the way. The Chettipalayam police have registered a case in connection with the incident and have arrested Vignesh and are investigating.
