Devangar Munnetra Kazhagam submitted a petition to the District Collector highlighting various demands of handloom weavers

In their petition, they said, "The existing Handlooms Reservation Act in Tamil Nadu should be vigorously implemented. In the absence of procurement of weaving produce, an order should be issued to provide a relief of Rs.5,000 to the weavers' family.”



Coimbatore: The Devanagar Munnetra Kazhagam met the District Collector in person and submitted a petition on the various demands of the handloom weavers.

In their petition, they said, "The existing Handlooms Reservation Act in Tamil Nadu should be vigorously implemented. In the absence of procurement of weaving produce, an order should be issued to provide a relief of Rs.5,000 to the weavers' family. Every government employee should issue an order to purchase handloom cloth for Rs 5,000 per annum. In the weaver dominated districts, the District Collector shall hold a weavers grievance redressal meeting once in two months.

Capital loan should be provided to weavers, Facilities should also be provided to the handloom weavers to sell their produce online. Handloom weavers and powerloom weavers should be provided with loom equipment free of cost. Priority should be given to the children of handloom weavers in government employment. The demands include that the health insurance scheme medical card should be issued free of cost to the weavers."

The petition was submitted under the chairmanship of Pasupathy, the state honorary president of the periyar. They have asked the district collector to take up their demands with the chief minister.
