Udumalpet Thirumoorthy Dam should be desilted more and storage capacity increased - Farmers' Demand

After several months, district collector Christuraj has given permission to remove silt from the Udumalai Thirumoorthy dam. The farmers have demanded that permission be granted to extract additional silt.

Tirupur: Farmers have demanded permission to remove additional silt from the Thirumoorthy dam near Udumalpet.

Last year, permission was granted to extract 34,000 cubic metres of silt from the Thirumoorthy dam near Udumalpet in Tirupur district.

After several months, Tirupur district collector Christuraj has given permission to remove the remaining 17,000 cubic metres of silt from last year.

At this stage, the number of farmers seeking permission to dig silt in the Thirumoorthy dam is now high.

Already permitted quantity is not sufficient to pick up the silt. Hence, in the interest of the farmers, the district collector should give permission to take up additional silt from the Thirumoorthy dam.

Moreover, more water can be released into the Thirumoorthy dam when the silt is taken up in large quantities. This will not lead to shortage of drinking water for irrigation, the farmers said.
