Earthmover Owners Demand End to Extortion: Petition Filed Against Illegal Royalty Collections in Coimbatore

Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu: The Earthmover Owners Welfare Association has taken a bold stand against unlawful practices, filing a complaint at the Coimbatore District Collector’s office. The association alleges that a group operating under the banner of SR Groups is illegally collecting money in the name of royalty from laborers, creating an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty among the local construction industry.

In their petition, the Earthmover Owners Welfare Association advocates for the simplification of the licensing process for earth mining activities and insists on the immediate cessation of the unjust practice of collecting money in the guise of royalty. The association claims that the SR Groups, led by individuals named Selvam, Mariyappan, and Balamurugan, have been exploiting the situation by stopping trucks with the assistance of their servants during earthwork transportation from construction sites in Coimbatore and its suburbs.

The modus operandi of this group involves detaining trucks and demanding payment for royalty, threatening seizure and police involvement if the demands are not met. The association argues that these actions are not only detrimental to the local construction businesses but have also contributed to the escalation of prices for new vehicles, fuel, customs fees, spare parts, and other essential commodities. This, they contend, tarnishes the reputation of the government.

In response to this exploitation, the Earthmover Owners Welfare Association calls for the removal of the current system of royalty collection and advocates for the implementation of a transparent licensing system for mining activities. They stress the urgent need for a simplified procedure, coupled with proper permissions, to streamline the operations of businesses involved in earth mining.

Additionally, the association plans to escalate their concerns further by dispatching copies of the petition, filed at the District Collector’s Office, to key government authorities, including the Chief Minister, the Water Resources Minister, the Superintendent of Police in Coimbatore, and the Geology and Mines Department Office.

The Earthmover Owners Welfare Association stands united in their fight against unjust practices and hopes for swift action from the concerned authorities to bring an end to these exploitative activities.
