Surge in Country Bomb Usage in Coimbatore District Endangers Wildlife, Particularly Elephants

On 27/01/2024, a tragic incident occurred in the Karadimadai area of Coimbatore. While illegally manufacturing country bombs for hunting wild animals, Rangasamy and Maran experienced an accidental explosion.

Coimbatore: In Coimbatore District, there has been an alarming increase in the production and use of country bombs. This trend poses a serious threat to the local wildlife, with elephants being the most adversely affected. These animals, which require up to 300 KG of a mixed diet of seeds, leaves, and other plant materials, along with large quantities of water daily, are becoming victims of these explosives. The explosions often result in severe injuries to the elephants, leaving them unable to consume food, leading to starvation and death.

Proverbs such as "If the forest perishes, the nation perishes" illustrate the crucial role forests and their inhabitants play in our ecosystem. Elephants, particularly, are vital to the health of the forest. They contribute to the environment through their dung and are known for their impressive intelligence. Elephants typically migrate in search of favorable habitats, a journey that can cover at least 60 KM. This migratory behavior, critical for their survival, is now under threat due to the disturbance caused by country bombs.

The survival of these majestic creatures is increasingly challenged as their migratory paths are being disrupted, leading to a shortage of food and water. This disruption also affects their social structure and genetic diversity, as it becomes difficult for them to join other herds.

The conservation of elephants is essential for the preservation of our biodiversity and future generations. Public awareness about the impact of conservational efforts is crucial for their survival.

On 27/01/2024, a tragic incident occurred in the Karadimadai area of Coimbatore. While illegally manufacturing country bombs for hunting wild animals, Rangasamy and Maran experienced an accidental explosion. The blast caused severe injuries to Rangasamy’s left hand, necessitating immediate medical attention at Coimbatore Government Hospital.

Previously, in 2021, Rangasamy was arrested for possessing country-made bombs and wild boar meat. Further investigations in 2022 led to the discovery of explosives in his residence, resulting in his arrest. Released on conditional bail recently, he reportedly continued to engage in the production of country bombs.

The District Forest Officer has recommended the arrest of these individuals under the Goondas Act to the Coimbatore District Collector.
