Coimbatore Revels in Traditional Valli Kummattam Dance

Coimbatore's Karumathampatti and surrounding areas witnessed the traditional Valli Kummattam dance, part of the region's rich folk culture, performed enthusiastically by participants of all ages during a temple festival, showcasing the area's deep-rooted cultural heritage.

Coimbatore: The Kongu region is renowned for its vibrant folk arts, including Valli Kummattam, Pavala Kummattam, Oyilattam, and Kummattam. These ancient dance forms are a staple at festivals in Coimbatore, Tirupur, and Erode districts, performed by a handful of people who have mastered these traditions.

In particular, the Sangamam Art Group, led by instructor Kanagaraj along with assistants Tamilselvan and Karthi, has been offering free lessons on Valli Kummattam in various villages around the Coimbatore district, including Karumathampatti. As a result, students from Karumathampatti participated in the dance performance at the Mariamman Temple Festival on February 21, held in the temple courtyard.

The performance included over 100 dancers, ranging from 3-year-old children to college students, middle-aged adults, and the elderly, who danced with synchronized movements to Kummattam songs. The highlight of the event was the dancers dressed as gods such as Shiva, Murugan, and Vinayagar, who joined children in the performance, captivating the audience. The event attracted a large crowd from Karumathampatti and its neighboring villages, who were mesmerized by the Valli Kummattam performance.
