Madras High Court Orders ‘Savukku’ Shankar to Respond to Contempt Petition by G Square

‘Savukku’ Shankar, accused of defying a court order, has been directed by the Madras High Court to provide a detailed affidavit in response to a contempt petition by real estate firm G Square. Shankar had earlier furnished an unconditional apology for making baseless remarks about G Square on November 18, 2023.

Coimbatore: The Madras High Court on Monday, March 18, 2024, issued a notice to ‘Savukku’ Shankar, also known as A. Shankar, in connection with a contempt of court petition filed by G Square, a real estate firm. Justice K. Kumaresh Babu has called for a detailed explanation from Shankar, who is accused of willfully disobeying a court order dated June 26, 2023.

The court order initially emerged from a civil suit lodged by G Square in 2022, where they accused Shankar of broadcasting baseless accusations on social media for personal gain and affecting the firm's business. G Square claimed a loss of ₹15.16 crore from 28 cancelled property bookings due to Shankar's statements, leading to an interim injunction to prevent him from making defamatory remarks against the company.

Despite the injunction, Shankar sought to vacate it in 2023. Eventually, Shankar had furnished an unconditional apology for his statements on 18, November 2023. Justice Babu modified the order, allowing Shankar to comment on public records after a 72-hour waiting period post an email notification to G Square. However, senior counsel E. Omprakash has now alleged that Shankar continued to make unfounded allegations without adhering to the court's directive, which he deems as willful contempt of the court’s orders. The counsel has requested that the court take punitive action against Shankar, who had previously been found guilty in a suo motu criminal contempt case by the court.
