Mandatory Paid Leave for Out-of-State Workers to Vote in Elections, Says Tamil Nadu Government

The Tamil Nadu government mandates paid leave for temporary and contractual workers from Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka working in Coimbatore to vote in their home states during the election dates.

Coimbatore: The Lok Sabha elections in India are set to occur in seven phases, with Tamil Nadu already having completed its voting on April 19. Following this, the next phases will see states like Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh going to the polls on April 26 and May 7, with May 3 also marked for elections in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

In light of the elections, the Tamil Nadu government’s Labor Department recently announced a crucial directive applicable to Coimbatore district. All organizations, including shops, commercial establishments, transport firms, bidi companies, food businesses, and IT/BPO sectors, are required to grant paid leave to their daily wage, temporary, and contractual workers hailing from the aforementioned states to enable them to vote in their respective states. This directive falls under section 135B of the Representation of the People Act 1950, which mandates paid leave on election dates.

Strict action will be taken against institutions that fail to comply with this order. To ensure enforcement, district monitoring teams have already been established by the Labor Department. For any complaints regarding the leave policy, Coimbatore's District Officer or the Deputy Commissioner of Labor can be contacted at 9445398752 / 0422-2241136.
