Dark Streets due to Unlit Streetlights on Race Course Walkway Causes Public Distress

Coimbatore's Race Course walkway often witnesses packed morning and evening walks, yet unresolved lighting issues leave pedestrians uneasy, especially women.

Coimbatore: The Race Course walkway, a favorite spot for local residents to engage in daily walking exercises, now presents a concern as multiple streetlights failed to light up on April 26. Despite being equipped with modern LED lights and facilities like Media Tree, seating, and free Wi-Fi under the Smart City project, the frequent malfunctioning of lights has caused consternation among users.

Sprawling over a two-kilometer radius, the walkway has been a testament to urban upgrading. However, the malfunctioning streetlights particularly affected evening walkers, who felt insecure due to the lack of adequate lighting. This issue is notably distressing for women, increasing their apprehension during their routine exercises.

The local administration's investment of several crores in the facilities has yet to result in a permanent fix for these intermittent lighting failures, leading to public dissatisfaction amidst otherwise appreciated enhancements. Citizens and regular walkers are calling for urgent action to ensure safety and restore confidence in the use of these public amenities.
