Illegal Quarry Seized near Pollachi, Explosive Materials and Detonators Recovered

Near Pollachi, police seized 1300 explosive materials including detonators and gelatin sticks from an unauthorized quarry in Ganapathipalayam. Two individuals were arrested, intensifying investigations.

Coimbatore: On May 4th, in a significant operation near Pollachi, the police seized 1300 explosive materials from an illegal quarry in Ganapathipalayam. This includes 950 electric detonators and 350 gelatin sticks, reportedly hidden without proper licensing. The raid followed a tip-off to the Anaimalai police regarding this unauthorised activity that could potentially pose a serious threat to public safety.

The raided quarry, believed to be owned by an individual named Thalapathy (70), had been operating without necessary permits. Additionally, the area is known for its numerous stone quarries, some of which reportedly operate without the required permissions, leading to illegal mineral trafficking primarily towards Kerala. Environmental activists and political figures have repeatedly criticized such unregulated mining operations for their environmental impact and potential safety hazards.

Following the raid, the police apprehended two individuals, Thalapathy and Ramasamy, who are now under intense investigation for their involvement in the illegal storage and potential distribution of explosives. This operation marks a critical step in curbing illegal mining activities in the region, safeguarding the local ecology and community from undue risks.
