Five Arrested for Possessing and Selling Banned Narcotics in Coimbatore

Five individuals were arrested in Coimbatore for possessing and selling banned substances including methamphetamine and pain relievers used by pregnant women.

Coimbatore: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Coimbatore city police have arrested five youths during a patrol in the Sunnambu Kalvai area.

Police Commissioner Balakrishnan announced that the suspects were caught carrying and intending to sell banned narcotics, including methamphetamine and various pharmaceuticals.

During the investigation, three grams of methamphetamine and 116 narcotic pills were seized from the suspects identified as Praveen Shetty, Sahul Amit, Murugan, Riyaz Khan, and Akbar Ali.

Following the arrests, Commissioner Balakrishnan revealed that these controlled substances included pain relief medications meant for pregnant women, which were being diverted for recreational drug use. He informed that the pills were procured from Karnataka, where suspect Pravin Chetty has been operating a medical shop in the Uppli area and selling these drugs at high prices. More than one lakh tablets have been sold in Coimbatore alone, valued at Rs. 14 each but sold for much higher.

The Commissioner expressed confidence that these arrests have significantly disrupted the local drug supply chain. Additionally, he emphasized ongoing awareness campaigns to inform school and college students about the dangers of drug abuse. Strict measures are being taken to prevent the sale of narcotics, especially before the reopening of educational institutions.
