A 42-year-old man, a native of Sivaganga district, was arrested by the Kattoor Police at Gandhipuram bus stand after he allegedly borrowed a mobile phone on the pretext of making an urgent call and attempted to flee with it.
What began as a seemingly ordinary request for help at Coimbatore’s Gandhipuram Central Bus Stand ended in a dramatic chase after a man allegedly fled with a mobile phone he had borrowed on the pretext of making an urgent call.
The incident occurred on Saturday morning when Prabhakaran (36), a native of Mettur in Salem district who has been living in Coimbatore for the past five years, was waiting near the Salem bus bay along with his nephew, Deena. Prabhakaran works as a site employee at a private company in Periyanaickenpalayam.
According to the police, an unidentified man approached Prabhakaran and claimed that he had lost his mobile phone and needed to urgently contact his family. Believing the request, Prabhakaran handed over his phone.
However, the man allegedly pretended to make a call before suddenly running away with the device. Prabhakaran chased him and, with the help of members of the public, caught him near the Erode bus bay.
A search of the man allegedly led to the recovery of Prabhakaran’s mobile phone and ₹1,200 in cash that had been kept inside its cover. Police also seized two other mobile phones from him. The total value of the recovered property was estimated at ₹26,200.
The accused was handed over to the Kattoor police, who identified him as Govindan alias Govindaraj (42), a resident of South Samudram in Ilayangudi, Sivaganga district.
Police arrested him and remanded him in judicial custody.
