Baahubali Elephant Wanders into Residential Area in Mettupalayam

Late last night, an elephant named Baahubali wandered from Nellimalai forest into a residential area in Mettupalayam, crossing the usual pathway and entering Sukku Coffee residential area unexpectedly.

Coimbatore: In an unusual event, Baahubali, a wild elephant, ventured into a residential area in Mettupalayam late last night. Residents of the area witnessed this rare occurrence as the elephant crossed Samayapuram Road, deviating from its regular pathway.

The Western Ghats, at the foothills of which Mettupalayam is located, are home to diverse wildlife, including elephants. These elephants often move out of their dense forest habitats in search of food and water, especially during the night, and venture into nearby villages and farms, causing crop damage.

Due to severe drought conditions prevalent in the forests during summer, sightings of elephants and other wildlife migrating closer to human settlements are increasing. Last night, after crossing the main road, Bahubali entered Sukku Coffee residential area around the local shops and dwellings, creating a stir among the residents.

An elderly woman, witnessing the large elephant navigate tightly parked motorcycles, spontaneously exclaimed in a guiding tone, "Ganesha move on, Vinayaga move on," which seemed to influence the elephant's movements. Remarkably, Baahubali carefully moved away from the vehicles without causing any damage and eventually returned to the Kallar forest area.

This incident highlights the ongoing human-wildlife conflicts in regions bordering forest areas and stresses the need for effective measures to ensure the safety of both community members and wildlife.
