Google in Advanced Talks to Manufacture Pixel Smartphones in Tamil Nadu

Google is reportedly engaging with Foxconn to produce Pixel smartphones in Tamil Nadu, marking a strategic move to expand their manufacturing base and meet growing market demands. This effort is spearheaded by Minister TRB Rajaa.

Coimbatore: Technology giant Google is currently in advanced discussions with Foxconn, a renowned contract manufacturer, to start local production of its Pixel smartphones in Tamil Nadu. This initiative aims to leverage the rising demand for premium smartphones within India, the world's second-largest smartphone market by volume.

The plan to localize manufacturing signifies Google's intent to enhance its logistical footprint and reduce costs, while tapping into Tamil Nadu's robust electronics manufacturing ecosystem. This ecosystem is further supported by significant investments from other major tech players, including Apple, through its suppliers Foxconn, Pegatron, and collaborations with Tata.

A delegation from Tamil Nadu, headed by State Industry Minister TRB Rajaa, along with several key officials, recently met with Google's executive team in the United States to discuss potential collaborations. Although specific details regarding the size of the investment or the expected job creation are still under wraps, this move is seen as a testament to Tamil Nadu's growing importance as a manufacturing powerhouse for advanced electronic goods.

Furthermore, Google's parent company Alphabet plans to initiate drone manufacturing via its subsidiary, Wing LLC. This development is part of Alphabet's strategy to expand its footprint in the emerging drone technology sector, primarily focusing on delivery services across businesses in various international markets.

Interestingly, Google is also conversing with Dixon, another local manufacturer, to potentially diversify its manufacturing strategy for the Pixel smartphones within India. This comes against the backdrop of Tamil Nadu's significant contribution to India's electronics exports, which stands at $9.56 billion, nearly a third of the national total.
