CII-IGBC Workshop Focuses on Transforming Tiruppur into a Green City

The CII-IGBC hosted a half-day workshop in Tiruppur to educate and inspire officials on transforming Tiruppur Municipal Corporation into a green city, promoting sustainable development practices.

Coimbatore: In an effort to advance sustainability within urban environments, the Confederation of Indian Industry - Indian Green Building Council (CII-IGBC) organized a pivotal workshop today at the Tiruppur City Municipal Corporation (TCMC) premises. The event focused on imparting crucial knowledge and sharing best practices around green cities on both national and international levels.

The workshop was graced by the presence of key figures such as Pavan Kumar G, IAS, Commissioner of TCMC, who outlined the various sustainable initiatives underway. These include LED street lighting projects, advanced wastewater treatment and reuse systems, renewable energy projects, and various integrated development projects aimed at bolstering the city’s infrastructure towards better sustainability.

Delving deep into the framework of constructing a green city, the CII-IGBC team provided attendees with a detailed presentation covering the green cities framework, supported by an array of case studies to illustrate practical implementation. The presentation served as a motivational tool urging city officials to embrace and act upon the green city indicators.

Elango D, Chairman of CII Tiruppur, emphasized the importance of collective and concerted efforts for achieving a green city status, highlighting Tiruppur’s distinction as the first existing city in Tamil Nadu to adopt the IGBC Green Cities rating system.

Milton Ambrose John, Past Chairman of CII Tiruppur, expanded on the topic by mentioning that the IGBC Green Cities rating is developed to assist cities in setting measurable sustainability goals and striving for global green city standards.

In a technical session led by Saurav Choudhury, Counsellor, the participants discussed the technical aspects and implementation stages of becoming a green city. LED by various experts and task force members from TCMC, discussions also covered action plans to improve Tiruppur’s Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) according to the IGBC Green City rating.

The workshop saw significant participation, with over thirty key officials from all relevant TCMC departments attending the event, highlighting an across-board commitment to transform Tiruppur into a model green city.
