CWC Calls for Rahul Gandhi to be Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha

The Congress Working Committee in New Delhi resolved that Rahul Gandhi should be the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, following his electoral wins in Raebareli and Wayanad.

New Delhi: The Congress Working Committee (CWC) has officially passed a resolution advocating for Rahul Gandhi, the party MP from Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, and Wayanad, Kerala, to be appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. This decision was made public on Saturday.

Kumari Selja, Congress MP, stated post-CWC meeting, "It was the committee's desire that Rahul Gandhi be elected the Leader of the Opposition..." echoing a sentiment shared by other influential party members, including newly elected MP from Alappuzha, KC Venugopal, who mentioned, "The CWC unanimously requested Rahul Gandhi to take up the role."

The resolution also commended Rahul Gandhi for his significant contributions to the Congress's election campaign, particularly highlighting his leadership in the Bharat Jodo Yatra and the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. According to the CWC, these initiatives greatly influenced the nation's political landscape, aligning with Gandhi's efforts to safeguard the constitution, which became a central theme in the 2024 elections under the PaanchNyay-Pachees Guarantee program.

The extended meeting at the national capital saw attendance from several top Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi, Manish Tiwari, DK Shivakumar, and Revanth Reddy among others.

Further support for Gandhi's proposed role as LoP was voiced by Congress Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari, who described him as "fearless and courageous." Meanwhile, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy declared Gandhi's candidacy for the position a demand of the entire nation, emphasizing Gandhi's advocacy for women and the unemployed.

The support for Rahul Gandhi was also endorsed by other Congress members, with MPs like Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa advocating for his ability to effectively challenge the Prime Minister in the Parliament.

The backing for Rahul Gandhi comes in the wake of Congress emerging as the second-largest party in the recent Lok Sabha elections, marking a significant improvement from their previous numbers in 2019.
