Coimbatore District Administration and Helping Hearts conducted the annual review meeting for the homeless and rescue centers for 2023-2024, under the leadership of District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati on June 14.
Coimbatore: A significant meeting took place at the Coimbatore District Collector's Office on June 14, presided over by District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati, reviewing the operations of centers dedicated to the rescue and welfare of the homeless and destitute. This annual evaluation aimed at addressing the efficacy of current plans and initiatives providing shelter, health, social services, and economic opportunities for the community's most vulnerable.
City Corporation Commissioner Sivaguru Prabhakaran, Pollachi Sub-Collector Katherine Saranya, volunteers, and the founder of Helping Hearts, Ganesh, were among the key stakeholders who participated in this review. The meeting focused on enhancing the support structures for mentally ill and differently-abled individuals who live without homes.
In Coimbatore, the district administration is actively working with the NGO Helping Hearts to reestablish individuals by identifying them from various parts of the district and providing them with food, clothing, and medical assistance. Through six shelter homes under the rescue and welfare centers, 176 individuals have been rescued from the streets for the fiscal year 2023-2024. Along with the ongoing support, a total of 343 people are currently being cared for in these facilities. Of these, 87 have been successfully rehabilitated with their families, emphasizing the social reintegration aspect of the district’s efforts.
At the meeting, discussions covered how government agencies and charities could improve facilities at these centers, ensure the well-being of their residents, and develop self-sufficiency programs. The attendees also assessed how to better obtain CSR funds from private companies to support these initiatives further.
Additionally, the forum addressed the need for internment services, where 63 deceased individuals had been provided with dignified funerals, highlighting the community's commitment to respecting each individual's life, even in death.
Today’s meeting underscored the importance of collaboration between the district administration and private sectors in enhancing the quality of life for Coimbatore’s most at-risk residents, ensuring they receive the necessary medical care, and confirming that they are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
