More than two hundred sanitation workers held a sit-in at the municipal office in Town Hall, Coimare, demanding the immediate relocation of the Ukkadam Fish Market to facilitate housing projects.
Coimbatore: In a significant protest, over 200 sanitation workers convened at the Coimbatore municipal office in Town Hall area, staging a sit-in to urge the immediate relocation of the Ukkadam Fish Market. The market's relocation has been a longstanding issue, promised to be resolved with the construction of apartment complexes for underprivileged community members residing in CMC Colony, Ukkadam.
In 2018, the municipal administration announced plans to relocate the market due to the construction of a flyover at Ukkadam and to use the vacated space for building residential units. Four years later, despite the flyover project nearing completion, the fish market continues operations, causing difficulties for the community members living temporarily in rented accommodations.

The sanitations workers' protest highlights the urgency of addressing their resettlement needs, emphasizing that the promised homes, anticipated to be completed in 18 months from the project's start, are still pending. The workers are calling for swift action from the municipal authorities to fulfill their commitments.
Immediate and decisive action is expected from the municipal authorities to meet the demands of the protestors and alleviate their living conditions by expediting the housing developments.
