Coimbatore: A mysterious person has stolen a 5 sovereign gold chain from a jewelry shop on Raja Street in Coimbatore by deceiving an elderly man. The CCTV footage of the incident has created a stir.
Vishnu, a resident of Raja Street area, owns two jewelry shops named RV Jewellery on Raja Street and Periya Kadai Street. Yesterday morning, an unidentified person visited the Raja Street shop and asked to see a 10 sovereign chain. After examining the designs, he suddenly dropped one gold chain on the floor and picked it up, as there were others present. He then left, saying the design wasn't suitable, and visited other shops.
Later that evening, after the shop owner Vishnu had gone home for lunch, the same person returned to the shop. Vishnu's father was minding the store at that time. The man claimed he wanted the same gold chain he had seen in the morning, stating he couldn't find a similar design in other shops.
Believing him, Vishnu's father moved to retrieve the chain. In a split second, as the elderly man was distracted, the thief stole a five sovereign gold chain from the shop display. He then quickly said he didn't want the jewelry and fled the scene.

When Vishnu's father became suspicious and checked the inventory, he discovered that an 83-gram gold chain was missing. Shocked, he informed his son. Vishnu arrived at the shop, reviewed the CCTV footage, and filed a complaint at the Periya Kadai Street Police Station.
The police have registered a case and are investigating. Meanwhile, CCTV footage showing the mysterious person distracting the elderly man and stealing the five sovereign gold chain has been released.
Other shop owners in the area reported that the thief attempted to steal from various shops and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, which is why he was wearing a mask.
