Coimbatore: The All Types of Differently-Abled Persons Association staged a protest at the Udumalpet Taluk Office in Tiruppur district, led by Malini, the Tiruppur district treasurer. The demonstration was organized to address recent controversial statements and actions affecting the differently-abled community.
The protestors demanded legal action against an individual named Mahavishnu, who allegedly made discriminatory remarks about differently-abled people at a government school in Ashok Nagar, Chennai. Mahavishnu reportedly claimed that being born with disabilities was a result of sins committed in previous lives, a statement that deeply offended the community.
The association called for a case to be registered under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act against the person who demeaned the birth of differently-abled individuals. They also urged the Tamil Nadu government to immediately revoke the transfer order of a visually impaired teacher who had questioned these superstitious beliefs during the school event.
The protest saw participation from various political and social organizations. Notable attendees included Jagadeesan, the Deputy Secretary of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) for Tiruppur district, Kanagaraj, the Udumalpet Union Secretary of the Marxist Communist Party, and Rajesh, the Tiruppur District Secretary, along with many others.
The demonstration highlighted the ongoing struggle for dignity and equal rights for differently-abled individuals in society, emphasizing the need for greater awareness and sensitivity towards their issues.
