POCSO Act Prisoner Dies in Coimbatore Central Prison

A 66-year-old POCSO Act prisoner from Rasipuram, serving a 6-year sentence in Coimbatore Central Prison, died at Coimbatore Government Hospital on September 6 after being admitted for diabetes and neurological issues.


Coimbatore: A 66-year-old prisoner, Karuppannan from Rasipuram in Namakkal district, who was serving a six-year sentence under the POCSO Act at Coimbatore Central Prison, passed away at Coimbatore Government Hospital on Wednesday, September 6.

Karuppannan had been suffering from diabetes and neurological issues while in prison. He was initially receiving treatment at the prison hospital. However, due to the need for advanced medical care, he was admitted to Coimbatore Government Hospital on September 6.

The prisoner was placed in the jail inmates' ward under police protection. Despite intensive care provided by the doctors, Karuppannan's condition did not improve, and he tragically passed away on Wednesday.

Following the incident, prison warden Latha filed a complaint at the Race Course Police Station. The police have registered a case and are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the prisoner's death.

Karuppannan's body will be subjected to a post-mortem examination as part of the standard procedure in such cases. The authorities are expected to provide further details once the investigation is complete.
