Siruthuli Foundation Receives National Award for Social Change in Sustainable Environmental Development

Siruthuli Foundation, based in Tamil Nadu, has been awarded a national-level recognition for sustainable environmental development at the CSR Universe National Conference and 4th Annual Social Change Awards on September 17.

Coimbatore: The Siruthuli Foundation has been honored with a national-level award for sustainable environmental development at the CSR Universe National Conference and 4th Annual Social Change Awards. This prestigious recognition comes as a result of their impactful work in water conservation and management across various districts in Tamil Nadu.

Out of 489 organizations that applied for the awards from across India, only 38 were selected. Notably, Siruthuli Foundation is the sole recipient from Tamil Nadu in the environmental development category, highlighting the significance of their achievements.

The foundation's success stems from its collaborative efforts with AMM Foundation and EID Parry in implementing the Nanneer (Good Water) Project across Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Erode, Karur, and Chennai districts. Their focus has been on rejuvenating water bodies, particularly in areas where groundwater is unsuitable for agriculture due to high salinity.

In Sivaganga and Pudukkottai districts, where kanmais (traditional water tanks) are abundant, Siruthuli has worked on strengthening embankments and increasing water storage capacity. This initiative has transformed agricultural practices, enabling farmers to cultivate three crops a year instead of just one.

In Erode and Karur districts, where the Bhavani Dam supplies water for only six months, leaving the land parched for the remainder of the year, Siruthuli has implemented innovative solutions. They have desilted ponds, increased water holding capacity, and installed percolation shafts for rainwater harvesting. These efforts have significantly improved groundwater levels in surrounding borewells.

To date, the Nanneer Project has successfully restored 18 water bodies, increasing their storage capacity by over 2,000 million liters. This initiative has benefited approximately 21,000 farmers in the region.

The national award from CSR Universe recognizes Siruthuli Foundation's outstanding contribution to social change through sustainable water management practices, setting a benchmark for environmental conservation efforts across the country.
