Coimbatore: A municipal council meeting in Mettupalayam, Coimbatore district, turned chaotic on Wednesday when an AIADMK councilor threw a tumbler at the female chairperson, Mehriba Parveen, leading to heated arguments between AIADMK and DMK members.
The incident occurred during discussions on various issues, including street lights and water supply problems. AIADMK councilors raised allegations about inadequate services, while a DMK councilor accused the revenue department of encroaching on a waterway to construct a municipal road.
As tensions escalated, an AIADMK councilor suddenly threw a tumbler towards the chairperson, causing an uproar. DMK councilors immediately gathered in front of the chairperson's seat and engaged in a verbal altercation with AIADMK members. Police personnel stationed outside were called in to control the situation.
Amidst the chaos, Chairperson Mehriba Parveen declared all resolutions passed and left the meeting. AIADMK councilors continued their sit-in protest at the meeting hall, condemning the municipal administration's alleged failure to carry out proper works.
Following the incident, Chairperson Mehriba Parveen announced the suspension of nine AIADMK councilors from attending the next two meetings, citing their disruptive behavior and attempts to intimidate her during the council session.
