8 Kerala Tourists Killed as Van Plunges Into Gorge on Valparai Ghat Road

Eight tourists from Kerala, including several women, were killed and five others injured after a tourist van plunged nearly 800 feet into a deep gorge on the Valparai-Pollachi ghat road in Tamil Nadu on Friday evening. Rescue teams rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to hospital.


Coimbatore: In a tragic accident, eight tourists from Kerala lost their lives after the van they were travelling in veered off the Valparai-Pollachi ghat road and plunged into a deep gorge near Valparai on Friday evening.

According to reports, the victims were part of a tourist group visiting the hill station when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a hairpin bend on the steep ghat section. The van is said to have fallen several hundred feet into the ravine. 

Rescue operations were immediately launched by police, fire and rescue personnel, and local residents. Five injured passengers were pulled out from the wreckage and admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Preliminary information indicated that the deceased included seven women and one man, all believed to be residents of Kerala. Authorities have begun an investigation into the cause of the accident.

Leaders of various political parties from Coimbatore district have expressed shock over the tragic accident and conveyed their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the victims.
