Disabled Persons Protest Against 100-Day Employment Scheme Abolition in Tiruppur

Police arrested 59 disabled persons in Tiruppur who attempted road blockade protest in front of Kumaran Memorial against the Central Government's move to abolish the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme by changing its name.

Tiruppur: Disabled persons staged a protest in Tiruppur against the Central Government's attempt to abolish the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme by changing its name. Police arrested 59 disabled persons during the demonstration.

The protest was organized by the Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Disabled Persons and their Guardians, condemning the Modi Government's plan to rename the scheme as VP Ji Ramji and ultimately abolish the 100-day employment programme.

More than 59 disabled persons participated in the demonstration held in front of Kumaran Memorial in Tiruppur. When they attempted to stage a road blockade, police intervened and stopped them.

The protesters raised slogans condemning the Central Government's decision. They stated that attempting to abolish the 100-day employment scheme, which serves as a livelihood for rural poor people, is wrong.

Subsequently, police arrested the 59 disabled persons who attempted the road blockade and took them to a nearby marriage hall. They were later released.

The protesters emphasized that MGNREGA provides crucial employment opportunities to rural communities and any move to dismantle it would severely impact the livelihoods of economically vulnerable sections. They demanded the Central Government reconsider its decision and continue the scheme that has been instrumental in providing employment security to millions of rural workers across the country.
