Siruvani Reservoir Level Rises by Nearly 2.5 Feet in Four Days

Continuous rainfall over the Siruvani catchment has pushed the reservoir level up to 22.76 feet, a rise of nearly 2.5 feet in four days, while widespread showers continued across the Western Ghats and Coimbatore's Valparai hill regions, with heavy rainfall recorded at Chinnakallar and Cinchona.

Coimbatore: Persistent southwest monsoon showers over the Siruvani catchment and the Western Ghats have continued to replenish Coimbatore’s primary drinking water source, with the Siruvani reservoir recording a steady rise in water level over the past week.

After receiving consistent rainfall in its catchment areas over the last several days, the reservoir’s water level has climbed to 22.76 feet as of Saturday morning, up from 20.27 feet on July 28. The level had risen to 21.45 feet on July 30 and 22.14 feet on July 31, marking an increase of nearly 2.5 feet in just four days. Against its full reservoir capacity of 44.61 feet, the latest rise has brought fresh optimism for the city’s drinking water supply.

According to officials of the Siruvani Combined Water Supply Augmentation Scheme (CWSAS), the reservoir received 32 mm of rainfall during the 24-hour period ending Saturday morning, while Siruvani Adivaram recorded 4 mm. The scheme supplied 69.07 million litres per day (MLD) of drinking water against its installed capacity of 101.40 MLD.

Rainfall continued to be concentrated along the Western Ghats, particularly in the Valparai region. Chinnakallar emerged as the wettest location in the district with 86 mm of rainfall, followed by Cinchona (65 mm), Sholayar (54 mm), Valparai PAP (54 mm) and Valparai Taluk (52 mm). Light rainfall was also recorded at Pollachi (12 mm), Makkinampatti (11 mm), Siruvani Adivaram (4 mm) and Kinathukadavu (3 mm).

While rainfall across the district eased marginally compared to the previous day, the hill regions continued to receive steady showers. The Coimbatore district recorded a cumulative rainfall of 344 mm and an average of 14.96 mm during the 24-hour period ending 7.30 a.m. on Saturday, compared to 404.30 mm and an average of 17.58 mm recorded a day earlier.

With the southwest monsoon remaining active over the Western Ghats, sustained rainfall in the Siruvani catchment is expected to maintain healthy inflows into the reservoir in the coming days, further strengthening water availability for Coimbatore.
