A group of Malaysian tourists travelling from Kerala towards Chennai were involved in an altercation with two persons near Navakkarai in Coimbatore on Wednesday evening, leaving a father and son injured. Police have launched an investigation after a person who reportedly followed the tourist vehicle later displayed an object resembling a firearm near Madukkarai Market.
Coimbatore: Police have launched an investigation into an altercation involving a group of tourists from Malaysia near Navakkarai on the Cochin–Salem Bypass Road on Wednesday evening. Two persons sustained injuries during the incident, while a subsequent confrontation near Madukkarai has also come under investigation.
According to preliminary information, the tourists were travelling in a hired Force Urbania from Alappuzha in Kerala towards Chennai when an altercation broke out with two persons near a petrol bunk at Navakkarai around 5.30 p.m. The incident occurred within the limits of the K.G. Chavadi Police Station.
During the altercation, Loganathan (52) and his son Ugendran (21) sustained injuries.
The tourist vehicle subsequently continued towards Madukkarai. Near Madukkarai Market, a person who had reportedly followed the vehicle on a two-wheeler is said to have displayed an object resembling a firearm, prompting the driver to stop the vehicle.
As members of the public gathered at the location, the persons travelling on the two-wheeler reportedly fled from the spot.
Police said these details have emerged from the preliminary enquiry and that the sequence of events is yet to be fully established. Investigators are examining CCTV footage from the areas concerned to identify those involved and establish what led to the altercation and the subsequent confrontation.
The Perur Deputy Superintendent of Police and Madukkarai Police Inspector are overseeing the investigation. Police said further action will follow after verification of the available evidence and completion of the enquiry.
